PIGGYBACK
OR SECONDARY OPTIC
The military and police have long favored the use of a riflescope in conjunction with a red dot sight. Sport shooters are gaining speed and accuracy by the arrangement of a red dot sight added to a riflescope. And lately, more hunters are beginning to understand the advantage of adopting this combo.
When both magnified scope and red dot sights are needed
In certain hunting situations when the hunter is posted having dense forest on one side and an open field or an area with sparse vegetation on the other, a red dot sight mounted on a riflescope performs exceptionally well.
The hunter can then use the magnified scope to take a shot in the field at longer distance, allowing them to inspect the game carefully and to harvest the animal with a precise shot.
Alternatively, the animal may come through the forest with bushes and branches concealing the animal until it gets close. In this scenario, a red dot sight comes into action. When game is close, you need to act quickly – and red dot sight allows you to aim with both eyes open and to take a safe shot even when the animal is moving as you are fully aware of the surroundings. Unlimited eye relief provided by the red dot sight allows you to take the shot in a matter of seconds.
For Sport shooters having to deal with targets placed a few meters away up to several hundreds of meters, it is beneficial to mount a red dot sight on the magnifying scope. A slight tip of the rifle to the side, and the shooter can quickly switch from close range to long range shooting without moving is/her hands from the rifle.
Professional users such as military and LE can encounter close combat situations to long range engagement and vice versa at any time. Therefore, carrying the right equipment at all times is extremely important. Having a red dot sight mounted directly on a magnifying scope is a solution to adapt to the situation quickly, while adding negligible weight to the soldier’s equipment.
Mounting solutions
Aimpoint offers multiple mounting solutions including a 45° angle mount. With this option the red dot sight is mounted directly on the picatinny rail of the weapon. Another solution is to use either the 30-mm or 34-mm scope adapter rings, allowing flexible placement of the red dot sight, either on top of the magnified scope or at any angle on the side of it.
